Manitou Cave is the oldest tourist attraction in North Alabama. Opened to the public in 1890 by the Fort Payne Coal and Iron Company. Manitou Cave had up to 300 visitors a day in the 1890s when Fort Payne was referred to as New England of the South. Manitou Cave is no longer open to the public, but private trips into the heart of the cave are available by appointment only. These caving trips are 2.5 hours long and offered by True Adventure Sports.
